DowntimeTown Episode 7 is now live, and it’s all about Space Hulk: Third Edition.
Enjoy.

Space Hulk was always quite blatantly what happened when the WH40K saw Aliens. And it was brilliant. And it spawned not only its own materials but a fucktonne of computer games also. UFO and many others are basically Space Hulk gone digital.
One thing though. The new is £100 on Amazon.
Too much?
Holy shit, that was brilliant! Absolutely brilliant Robert. I’m going to be singing that song all weekend.
Thanks, E.
Tadhg, a hundred quid? For me, easily worth even that.
Yeah, if I wasn’t living close to the breadline at the mo I’d be all over it.
Damn!
I have been vacillating about buying it or not.
The “kiss my dick” song may have tipped me over the edge.
Tadhg there are still apparantly some GW stores with stock of the game at the retail price of £60, I don’t know how possible it would be, but if you had a local store that doesn’t have it they might be able to get a copy sent to them for you from another store.
It does rather make me want to dig up or download every computer game and film where you’re a poor human stuck in a claustrophobic enviroment at the mercy of terrors from the darkness in additon to just playing the boardgame.
Great video! Love the enthusiasm.
So what are peoples thoughts on the rule changes? I’ve not gotten a chance to play my copy yet but seems like several tweaks that will greatly help the Marines and nothing for the Stealers.
brilliant episode…again.
Ahhh, good to know that others hold such a fond memory of Hulk. My mates and I played this non stop at Uni. And I mean non stop. You have never seen so many resulting 2:2’s due to revision time being overrun by hordes of genies. And I have fucked up knees from hours kneeling on cold unheated floors.
Do it all again mind…..
Yes Robert, yes! Wonderful to hear a true believer telling it like it…or at least how it was before marriage and children. I absolutely understand the claustrophobia and urgency of the timer which you describe so well. My mates and I never wore nappies though.
The tension as you get near the objective, ready for the last desperate effort, the white knuckle last overwatch shot when everybody is standing bent over the table… If only we could bottle these moments!
3rd edition is already selling for £100+ on Ebay. I have three unopened copies…I hope I can sell two and make enough to pay for the third copy for me.
For me, the only game to rival Hulk is Roborally. Hulk is my favourite serious game and Roborally is my favourite fun game.
Cheers, Ian
Nex: GW Oxford St London just did this for me today. They say there are very few copies left anywhere (they would say that wouldn’t they but it seems true enough). £58.75 (odd price) seemed like rather good value to me.
The weird price is because of the tax reduction a wee bit back, basicly dropped prices by around 2%, so £60 becomes £58.75.
I’m sorely tempted to pick up a 2nd copy just to have incase the one I’m playing with takes some damage while being used, but to be honest with the quality of the set i don’t really think that’s likely.
Your video inspired me to grab a couple of sets today down under here in Oz. Bit pricier than back in the UK – currency whores the GW people must be. Still, two luverly heavy boxes are MINE.
Just had to say I absolutely f**king loved your video review! Space Hulk is my all time fave board game and 3rd edition is just so much better than I could ever have hoped for. Loved your review of Chaos in the Old World too and may well pick that up soon (funds permitting) Keep churning out the vids you are fantastic!
Grumlin and I had agreed that we did not need the new Hulk set. We have at least 2 complete sets of all of the 1st edition Hulk stuff between us…and now we have 5 sets of 3rd edition between us aswell. Of course, I can stop playing any time I choose…
I was just shaking in such Hulk ecstasy that I spilt wine all over my keyboard. Curses.
Just remember Grumlin, every time we play the ‘Contract Revoked’ scenario I whip you silly! Anybody else remember that one?
A hunner quid? Is there no just like a normal £20-£30 one or something?
Gerry, look at Ebay. The 2nd edition sets tend to be the cheapest (because it is not as good as 1st or 3rd!). There are also some well used first edition sets which you might get for £30. The 1st edition sets have come down on Ebay now the 3rd edition is out. Also you can pick up odds and sods of map and figures if you want to do it on the cheap. The rules and scenarios can be found on line.
Good Hulking mate.
3rd edition really is lovely and scary and everything I want out of a GW game. The beautiful thing about it is it’s unpredictability, normally that would be bad but somehow Space Hulk takes that unpredictability and scares you with it. Sticking your mpace marine at the end of a corridor on overwatch isn’t a guarantee, it might take ten stealers or just one to take him down, then you have to change your game to compensate for what happens. Absolutely beautiful parts help the atmosphere too, although the dead terminator looks a little like Elvis. Which in retrospect is awesome.
I never assembled a figure in my life, will I have trouble assembling Space Hulk?
I’ve just watched all of these vids. It’s inspired me to re-grow my board game collection. I’ve ordered a few £10 copies of the games mentioned off ebay. 3rd Ed Space Hulk can fuck off though. It’s a fantastic game, but £120? I actually dislike anyone buying it from GW just to sell it on ebay at twice the price. Absolute tossers.
Anyway, where’s episode 6? I can’t see to find it on youtube or this site?
John if you get it you will have no trouble at all, the models slot together you don’t even need glue. You just use some wee clippers or a sharp knife to take them off the sprue then put the bits together and off you go.
Pod I couldnae agree more mate, I wonder how many people bought half a dozen or more copies just so they could flog them on the net for a crazy price. I’m happy with my one to play with.
That said eventually, if not already, the scans of the board sections and stuff will be up on the net somewhere, sure building it yourself wont get you the pretty models, but compared to £120 or more making cardboard pieces for the miniatures is a downside well worth taking in my opinion.
I’ve seen this video 4 times now.
We used to play Hulk all the time, the first time we played it was on its first week of release. I think I only ever saw the first mission completed once for the Blood Angels, It’s that first offshoot corridor from the undock that does your head in. Anyway, thanks for the video and the enthusiasm because you just made my wallet lighter.
Are you getting a cut of the marketing budget from GW?
Pod, 3rd edition is not selling for £120 on Ebay. Some people have put copies up at crazy ‘buy it now price’ or with stupidly high reserves but nobody bids. These very high ‘buy it now prices’ are probably just people trying to up the perception of market value. The actual sold prices are between £75 – £80 and, in relative terms, there are remarkably few copies actually being sold. The cynical profiteer is GW, which has deliberately created a supply shortage to sell stock at an already high price of £58.75. GW staff I have spoken to in stores have whipped up the hysteria about everywhere selling out fast. It is an effective short-term means of boosting turnover. Give it a year and they will probably do a limited release expansion for just £50.
By the way if you want a set I can sort you out…
I have to weigh in on this. I don’t think 59 quid is a high price at all. Agricola, which is all cards and little wooden cubes and counters, cost me around 50 quid this year. The big box Fantasy Flight games, like the recent Middle-Earth Quest, retails at the 60 quid mark, near enough. Board games tend to be expensive.
The limited stock thing is fair enough. Games Workshop is not a board game company anymore. Doing a one-time print run (which was a pretty large run, to be fair) is as much as you can ask, I think. That they did it at all is to be celebrated.
I am celebrating 3rd edition too! I am very pleased that a game I love is getting all this attention and new players.
Ok, I take your point about the £60 price mark; maybe I am a bit out of touch. My 1st edition was £22 new.
Just saw a 3rd edition copy go on Ebay for £97 which is a big jump above the average so far.
Is it my faulty memory or did genies used to be able to turn 90 degrees for free? Now its a point?
Yes free 90 degree turn. Don’t you remember forcing extra overwatch shots to get jams with those free turns?
Hi – what plug-in do I need to watch this video? Thanks!
